The Zatriq Mosque

Xhamia e Zatriqit

The mosque is located in the centre of the village of Zatriq, 12 km north of the town of Rahovec. According to the available data, it was built in the second half of the 18th century. One part of the mosque was used for prayer, while the other part served as a mejtep – a primary school.
The mosque building has a rectangular floor plan and belongs to the type of village mosques. It is divided into two parts, where the right side serves for prayer and the left side as a school. On the right side, in the north-western part, is the hayat (porch) with a rectangular floor plan. The hayat is enclosed, and provides access to the prayer hall and, via wooden stairs, to the mahvil – the gallery.
The prayer hall has a rectangular floor plan covered with a flat ceiling, above which is a hipped roof covered with tiles. Access to the prayer hall is through the hayat.
In the interior of the prayer hall the original elements have been preserved: the mihrab, the minbar, the mahvil railing and the ceiling, all of which were made using traditional building techniques.
The school (mejtep) is located on the north-eastern side of the prayer hall and is divided into a ground floor and an upper floor.
The minaret is located on the western wall of the mosque, has a hexagonal base about 3 metres high, and narrows to form a circular shaft up to the top. The minaret is built of local crushed stone. It has a medium height, is covered with a conical sheet-metal roof, and is characterised by the sherefe – the circular balcony, with toothed decoration on its lower part.
The mosque together with the mejtep played an important role in the education of the locals and in the social life of the village.
