Pastasellë Mosque, Pastasellë

Xhamia e Pastasellës, Pastasellë

In the village of Pastasellë, located 9 km northwest of Rahovec, there was an old mosque presumed to have been built before the 19th century.
In 1976 a new mosque was built on the foundations of the old one. Of the old mosque only the base of the minaret remains, up to a height of about 1 metre.
During the last war (1998-1999) this mosque was demolished from the inside, damage that could never be repaired, and so in 2011 the mosque was torn down again in order to build a new mosque on the same site where the latter had stood.
The new mosque was built on a larger scale, using modern building materials. The new mosque has a rectangular plan and consists of the enclosed porch (hajat), divided into two levels, the prayer hall covered with a dome, and a very tall minaret decorated with two balconies (sherefe) and the roof. In the new construction, perhaps because of the donors or the influence of foreign architecture, the influence of the Arab style can be seen in the mosque's architecture.
From the old mosque only the base of the minaret and the inscription of the renovation carried out during the first half of the 19th century have remained.
The base of the minaret was built with carved porous stone (spongy limestone) cut specially for such constructions, and the stones were bound with lime mortar.
The inscription is written on white marble, in the old Ottoman language, in the “Thuluth” style of writing, and is decorated with floral and geometric motifs.
