Stone Fountain, Rahovec

Kroi i Gurit, Rahovec

The Stone Fountain, otherwise also called the Fountain of Republika Square II, is located in Republika Square, in the old center of the town of Rahovec. It was built in the 18th century. From the time of its construction to this day, the fountain serves as a public fountain, supplying residents and passers-by with drinking water. The water reaches the fountain by free fall from the Zhdrella spring.

The fountain belongs to the type of wall-backed fountains, which were built mainly at street corners. It has a simple decorative treatment. It consists of two parts, the front and the basin. The front has a rectangular floor plan, and is made of carved stones of rectangular shape bound with lime mortar.

The upper part of the front ends in the form of a tympanum and is covered with a gabled roof shaped from stone slabs. In the middle of the tympanum a square stone is carved, bearing an Ottoman inscription. On the two sides of the fountain there are two niches for placing soap and other items. The basin has an irregular quadrangular floor plan, made of monolithic limestone.

The inscription, which is located on the front side of the wall, is written on limestone in the “Kufic” style. From the time it was built until now, the fountain has remained in its original location with some minor adaptations; the upper part has been demolished, and its reconstruction is planned on the basis of analogy with other public fountains.

With its form, dimensions, construction technique and artistic treatment, this fountain represents a special example of the public fountains built during the 18th-19th centuries in Rahovec.
