Xërxë Mosque

Xhamia e Xërxës

The mosque is located in the center of the village of Xërxë, 10 km southwest of Rahovec. According to the inscription at the entrance, it was built by Hysein Spahiu in 1900. From the time it was built until now it has performed the religious function of the village mosque.
The mosque complex consists of the courtyard, which is enclosed by a surrounding wall that separates the complex from the road on the northern and eastern sides, the mosque building, and the building used as a meeting hall for the residents of the neighborhood, to the southwest of the courtyard.
The mosque building has modest dimensions and belongs to the type of village mosques. In the northwestern part is the hayat with a rectangular floor plan. The hayat was originally built on a high ground floor, while in 2004 it was divided with a mezzanine construction, creating the floor that serves as an extended hall of the mahvil – the gallery. Access to the gallery is by external stairs placed on the western side.
The prayer hall has a rectangular floor plan covered with a flat ceiling, above which is a hipped roof covered with tiles. Access to the prayer hall is through the hayat. In the interior of the prayer hall the original elements have not been preserved. The minbar, the railing of the mahvil and the ceiling were newly made of wood.
The minaret is located on the western wall of the mosque, has a quadrangular base up to a height of one meter, and narrows to form a circular base up to the top. The minaret is built of local broken stones. It has a small height, is covered with a cone-shaped sheet-metal roof, and is characterized by the sherefe – the circular balcony.
Unprofessional interventions carried out over the years have reduced the original values of this mosque.
